Not really continuing from last issue (The Brave and the Bold 7)... Deep inside Challenger Mountain... ![]() ... our heroes take shifts to guard The Book of Destiny. |
Rocky comes on with
an industrial-size mug of coffee. "Hey, Red... some eyelid
grease. Drip for a drip. Check who shot JFK yet?"
But Red is frazzled. "Damn! I'm trying to focus here!.. All history, past, present, and future... The meaning of 'Megistus'..." OK, so the Challs don't "namecheck" because they're outside the book. But as Prof noted, quoted by Rocky, "The Book of Destiny not only gets in your head, it kicks the furniture around... Nobody's meant to know everything." Rocky sends Red to bed. "Whatever." |

Passed in the hall, and puzzled, June stops in. "Did something happen? Red just bit my head off -"
"Damn, June!" growls Rocky, already caught up in the Book. "I'm trying to focus here!" And Rocky reads about the Flash Family meeting the Doom Patrol... |
Wally West, the Flash, and wife Linda worry about their kids. Iris with her vibrational powers, and Jai with his super-strength, have Dr. Niles Caulder of the Doom Patrol worried too. So... Off to a haunted castle in Prague goes the Flashes. Caulder frets the children's "accelerated metabolisms" might make them age prematurely, even die of old age. The DP are acting weird, which is hardly news, but even enjoy tormenting the kids. Metamorpho joins Caulder to steam-stabilize the kids. Of course, it goes wrong. Caulder can only save one child, and demands Wally choose. No, insists the father. Robotman and Negative Man jump in. Jai becomes a mini-Robotman, and Iris a Negative Girl. The process finishes, everything straightened out. Except Metamorpho disappeared, leaving only the name "Megistus" etched in acid. And Wally's haunting memory. In a split-second, he chose which child to save... |
"You should see the dirty laundry in [this book]," gasps Rocky. "It's like TMZ [celebrity scandal] for super-heroes."
June wants Rocky to quit. He's been "sucked in" for hours. OK. But he Post-It notes "Megistus". "The name keeps popping up everywhere, with no explanation." Coincidence? Or "some big far-reaching' somethin'?" And when they're gone, a sinister hand reaches from The Book of Destiny's pages... |

Comments Yes, guarding The Book of Destiny is an awesome responsibility. But it would be nice to see the Challengers have their own adventure, rather than read about other heroes'.Still, a spooky menacing hand of doom looks promising. More next issue... |
