Challengers' of the Unknown time is up!

Challengers of the Unknown V2 Advertisement

The first warning that the Challengers were going to be "revived" came with this ad posted in various comics. Sandman 24 was one.

This new tack was not considered good news by Chall fans. The then-current trend at DC, after the success of The Dark Knight Returns, was to revive every DC character to death. To run them through a wringer. At a convention,Tony Isabella joked that he planned to "revive" Black Lightning as a child-molesting pimp with AIDS. Bob Ingersoll noted that DC's future-space heroes - Space Ranger, Star Hawkins, Tommy Tomorrow - had been desecrated by Howard Chaykin. "Now it's the Challengers turn in the barrel."

The art alone is off-putting. Ace looks like a zombie. Red is yelling, Rocky screaming. And Prof - by process of elimination, we deduce it's he - looks like Larry of the Three Stooges. Oh, boy.

This ad may have run in color in some DC comic. If so, ye webmaster has never found it.
