Challenger Headquarters

Challenger Mountain I
Wilderness Outpost

It takes a while, but the Challengers finally get their own mountain for a playhouse
(COTU 12).

First look at Challenger Mountain

At first, the Challs' "secret headquarters" is an open secret, since parts of it stick up in plain view. (Newsreel from New Frontier 3.) In this Cold War photo, it looks like a bomb shelter.

One persistent rumor (Silver Age Secret Files & Origins) is that the Challs inhabit the extinct volcanic crater inside The Devil's Tower in Wyoming.  (Also the destination in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind".)
The tower's official website is here.

Considering the butte is a national monument and park, and sacred to the local Native Americans, it's unlikely the guys would carve it out and camp. But perhaps the Challs spread the rumor to deliberately mislead fans - or just as a joke.

Exactly which Rocky Mountain do the Challs bunk in? Challenger Point in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Southern Colorado is a good candidate. It stands next to Kit Carson Peak and Columbia Point.

Read more about the area and see photos here.

As you can see in recent photos, the Challengers camouflaged the techno-additions. The guys might have pulled in them in for added security. Or because hikers and rock climbers kept poking around.

The mountain has a terrific view of miles and miles of wilderness (COTU 81).

In prehistoric times, Challenger Mountain was home to cave dwellers
(COTU 22).

The surrounding mountains haven't changed much in 20,000 years.

Challengerville

The location of Challenger Mountain is supposed to be a secret - except the guys regularly shop there in uniform.

The town was originally called Hadley, but later changed to Challengerville (COTU V2 1).

The town is north of the mountain, we learn in one adventure (COTU 22).
